Introduction

Hey there, fellow wanderers! We’re super excited to share our ultimate 2 week Vietnam itinerary with you. This country is a real treasure trove of experiences, from slurping up steaming bowls of pho to cruising through the emerald waters of Halong Bay. Trust us, two weeks in Vietnam is like living in a travel dream!

Planning Your Vietnam Trip

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty of our adventure, let’s talk about some travel tips to make your journey smooth sailing:

Best time to visit: We found that spring (February to April) and autumn (August to October) are pretty sweet for exploring Vietnam. The weather’s not too hot, and you’ll dodge the rainy season. Win-win!

Visa requirements: Most folks need a visa, but don’t sweat it! You can usually sort it out online before you go. Just double-check the latest info on the official Vietnam government website.

Getting around: Buses, trains, and domestic flights are all great options for covering ground in Vietnam. For short trips, we loved zipping around on motorbikes (but always wear a helmet, safety first!).

Packing tips: Think light, breathable clothes. Don’t forget to throw in a rain jacket and some comfy walking shoes. Oh, and pack your appetite – the food here is to die for!

Days 1-3: Hanoi and Surroundings

Kick off your Vietnam adventure in the chaotic charm of Hanoi. This city’s got a vibe all its own, and we’re here for it!

Day 1: Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake Start your day early (jet lag is your friend here!) with a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake. It’s like the heart of the city, and you might even spot some locals doing their morning tai chi.

Next up, lose yourself in the maze-like streets of the Old Quarter. Pro tip: Look up! The jumble of electrical wires above the streets is a sight in itself. Grab a Vietnamese coffee (trust us, it’s life-changing) and watch the world go by.

For lunch, hit up a street food stall. Bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) was our fave. Just follow your nose and the local crowds!

Day 2: History and Culture Today’s all about soaking up some Vietnamese history. Start at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum. It’s a bit somber, but super interesting.

In the afternoon, check out the Temple of Literature. It’s Vietnam’s first university and a beautiful example of traditional architecture.

End your day with a water puppet show. Yeah, it sounds weird, but it’s a unique Vietnamese art form and totally worth seeing!

Day 3: Tam Coc Day Trip Time to escape the city! Head to Tam Coc in Ninh Binh province, often called “Halong Bay on land”. Hop on a boat ride through stunning limestone karsts and rice paddies. It’s like being in a real-life postcard!

Don’t miss Bich Dong Pagoda while you’re here. The climb up is a bit of a workout, but the views are chef’s kiss.

Days 4-5: Halong Bay Cruise

No Vietnam itinerary is complete without cruising Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site that’ll make your jaw drop.

Day 4: Set Sail Board your cruise and prepare for some serious relaxation. As you sail past those iconic limestone islands, you’ll pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming.

Most cruises include activities like kayaking or visiting floating villages. Do it all – you’re here to experience everything!

Day 5: Sunrise and Caves Wake up early for a sunrise tai chi session on deck. Trust us, it’s worth getting up for!

Before heading back to port, most cruises stop at some of the bay’s famous caves. Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) is a popular one and it’s easy to see why – it’s huge and full of interesting rock formations.

Days 6-7: Hue and Its Imperial City

From Halong Bay, catch a quick flight to Hue, Vietnam’s old imperial capital.

Day 6: Imperial City Spend your day exploring the massive Imperial City. This place is like a city within a city, filled with palaces, temples, and gardens. It’s seen some tough times but is still incredibly impressive.

In the evening, take a sunset cruise on the Perfume River. Despite the name, it doesn’t actually smell like perfume, but it’s beautiful nonetheless!

Day 7: Thien Mu Pagoda and Food Tour Start your day at Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue. The seven-story pagoda is stunning, and the views over the Perfume River aren’t too shabby either.

In the afternoon, treat your taste buds to a food tour. Hue is famous for its royal cuisine, so dig in! We loved trying banh khoai (Hue-style pancakes) and com hen (baby clams with rice).

Days 8-10: Hoi An and Da Nang

Next stop: Hoi An, possibly the most charming town in all of Vietnam!

Day 8: Ancient Town Wanderings Spend your first day getting lost in Hoi An’s Ancient Town, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The yellow buildings, colorful lanterns, and laid-back vibe will steal your heart.

Don’t miss the Japanese Covered Bridge – it’s basically the poster child of Hoi An.

Day 9: Tailor-made and Beach Time Hoi An is famous for its tailors, so why not get something custom-made? In the morning, choose your fabric and design. While they work their magic, head to An Bang Beach for some R&R.

In the evening, pick up your new threads and strut your stuff along the lantern-lit streets.

Day 10: My Son Sanctuary and Da Nang Take a morning trip to My Son Sanctuary, a collection of ancient Champa temples. It’s like a mini Angkor Wat!

In the afternoon, swing by Da Nang. Snap a pic of the famous Dragon Bridge (it breathes fire on weekends!) and take a quick trip up to the Marble Mountains for some killer views.

Days 11-14: Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta

Last but definitely not least, we’re heading south to Ho Chi Minh City, still often called Saigon by locals.

Day 11: Cu Chi Tunnels and War Remnants Museum Start with a sobering visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels. It’s a stark reminder of Vietnam’s tough history, but an important stop.

In the afternoon, visit the War Remnants Museum. It’s heavy stuff, but it offers crucial insight into the Vietnam War from a Vietnamese perspective.

Day 12: City Explorations Time to hit the city highlights! Check out the beautiful Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral. Then dive into the sensory overload that is Ben Thanh Market – perfect for scoring some last-minute souvenirs.

Day 13: Mekong Delta Day Trip Take a day trip to the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s rice bowl. Cruise down narrow canals, visit floating markets, and try some fruits you’ve probably never heard of before.

Day 14: Final Foodie Day Spend your last day eating your way through the city. Slurp up some pho for breakfast, nibble on banh mi for lunch, and treat yourself to a fancy dinner to celebrate an amazing trip.

Food Journey Through Vietnam

Oh boy, where do we even start? Vietnamese cuisine is a flavor explosion, and every region has its specialties. Here are some must-tries:

  • Hanoi: Pho (obviously!), bun cha, and egg coffee
  • Hue: Banh khoai and com hen
  • Hoi An: Cao lau (noodles only made with water from a specific well) and white rose dumplings
  • Ho Chi Minh City: Banh mi and Vietnamese coffee

Pro tip: Take a cooking class! We did one in Hoi An and now we can impress our friends back home with our spring roll skills.

Cultural Insights and Etiquette

A few quick tips to help you navigate Vietnamese culture:

  • Learn some basic phrases. “Cam on” (thank you) goes a long way!
  • Always ask before taking photos of people.
  • Take your shoes off when entering homes or certain temples.
  • Respect war memorials and be sensitive when discussing recent history.

Q&A Section

Q: Is Vietnam safe for tourists? A: Generally, yes! Like anywhere, use common sense and watch out for petty theft in crowded areas.

Q: How’s the internet in Vietnam? A: Pretty good! We had no trouble staying connected, even in more rural areas.

Q: Do I need to book everything in advance? A: For popular cruises (like Halong Bay) and during peak seasons, yes. Otherwise, Vietnam is pretty easy for on-the-fly planning.
